Black Hack

Black Hack

This was taken in the front seat of a Belfast black hack, a black taxi that runs a particular route like buses and you share it with other people. You can see them driving up and down the road with prams hanging out the back of the boot, in fact thats something that visitors to the city always find mad, but its completely common place and actually makes sense as mammies don’t have to lift out children, bags and pack up a pram before jumping in. I’ll have to get a shot of that sometime, I actually don’t think I have one.

Brilliant! Even better than when you first showed it to me. I didn’t notice the springy dog and fluffy dice (or should that be die?) the first time. You should do an extended piece sometime on the Belfast Black Taxi culture – it has to be unique.

I have to say I hate it when you get into one where there is a pram hanging out of the back… you know it is going to add another five minutes on to your journey because the taxi driver has to get out, offload the pram, put it up, ensure the child is safely secured in it, before he (or she) gets around to asking for the fare. Drives me nuts.

Thanks Broad Axe, I will do something on the taxis at some stage, must dig out what I have from before too.

And laughing at the complaint about the prams, I remember watching a programme about the taxis some years ago and the drivers all complained about men waiting until they got out to root around their pocket for change, women, they said, always have it at the ready! And it was a couple of the drivers saying it too, bleedin holds you up so it does :)
